Zero and first conditional

"El lenguaje es el vestido de los pensamientos" (Samuel Johnson)

Hi! I'm Samira Medellin. Today we're going to talk about the zero and first conditional. I hope you like it.

Zero Conditional

If + present simple, ... present simple.

The zero conditional it's used when something will always happen without any exception. That is to say, it is not a possibility, it's a fact.

In this conditional the 'if' can usually be replaced by 'when' without altering the meaning.

The result of the 'if clause' is always the main clause.

Examples:

  • If it rains you get wet.
  • If you eat healthy you protect your health.
  • If you touch a fire, you get burned.

First conditional

If + present simple, will ... + Infinitive

The first conditional it's used to talk about things which might happen in the future (this describes possible things, which could easily come true).

Examples:

  • If it's sunny I'll go to the pool.
  • She'll arrive early if there is no traffic.
  • If it rains I won't go to my friend's house.
  • If I see him, I'll tell him.

First Conditional vs. Zero Conditional

The first conditional describes a particular situation, whereas the zero conditional describes what happens in General.
